Morningside Heights

The West End. Tom's Restaurant.
Only a couple of short blocks down from Columbia's entrance is the West End Cafe, hangout of Ginsberg, Kerouac, and Burroughs back when they were skulking around Columbia. To me, these days, it seems more like an Upper East Side frat-boy pickup bar. Such are the evil wages of gentrification! Across from the West End is "Tom's Restaurant", famous mostly for appearing in the opening of Seinfield. Personally, I think the food is mediocre for the amount of time you have to wait on line. For bustling Manhattan diner ambience, I personally prefer the Cosmic Diner ("the Cosmo") down on Columbus Circle.

Bus and 110th St.
At 110th St the bus leaves Broadway, and turns east onto 110th Street. Here we see it making the turn while we wait at the bus stop.

St John the Devine. Morningside Park Entrance.
Looking northwards at Amsterdam Avenue, we catch a glimpse of the Cathederal of Saint John the Divine. (Isn't it funny that the seasons can change from summer to winter to summer again in the space of a couple of bus stops?) Next we pass by the entrance to Morningside Park. You can see the uptown M4 bus on the right in this photo.

Go back to Columbia. Continue with the M4 bus tour.
