| Heading southwards from the valley's bottom, we hit Tiemann Place, and enter Morningside Heights, the area around Columbia University. Notice how all the buildings have been stripped of their ornamental crowns. Sadly, this is typical of many buildings in the Upper West Side. Personally, I think the buildings up in Washington Heights are more beautiful since their original architectural ornaments have been better preserved -- albeit through neglect. | Morningside Heights is fairly trendy & has lots of fun bars & restaruants for yuppies. Moreover, the trendiness creeps steadily northwards. These guys were working on installing a bar in a new restaurant on Broadway just south of Tiemann. It's true that there's always something going on on Broadway! |

| Heading towards Columbia's main entrance at 116th we encounter several religious institutions. This is the Jewish Theological Seminary. | Across the street is the Union Seminary. |

|
| In the same area is the Manhattan School of Music. This is the back of the school; the front faces Claremont. |

| Situated on the west side of Broadway, just before Columbia, is Barnard College. | Across the street is this building, labeled Columbia Teachers College. In the background you can see one of Columbia's newer, bomb-shelter style concrete towers built in the 1960s. |

| Finally, at 116th we come to the main entrance of Columbia University. | Across the street from Columbia's main entrance, also on 116th, is Ollie's Restaurant, a favorite of Columbia students. Personally, I'm partial to their chinese soups for lunch on a cold day. |
